The Teddy Clinic

Once a year, the fifth graders at Willow Creek School open the Teddy Clinic in the art room. Younger kids bring stuffed animals that need help. Hollis is in third grade, and this year she gets to be a helper.

The first patient is a floppy brown moose with a torn ear. Next come two deer with loose buttons for eyes. A little boy brings three tiny sheep that have lost their tails. A stuffed fox has a hole in its paw, and two ponies need new manes.

Hollis hands out needles, thread, and soft patches. She brushes the dusty fur and fluffs the stuffing. One stuffed shark is missing two of its teeth, so the helpers sew on new ones made of white felt.

At the end of the day, the helpers line up all the patients on the shelves. Parents and teachers smile at the neat rows. Two women at the front desk hand each child a get-well card. "These toys look as good as new," Hollis says with a grin.
