A Calf Named Pepita

Leilani spent spring break with her uncle Esteban at an animal rescue center in Costa Rica. Uncle Esteban is a scientist who cares for wild animals that are hurt or alone. The center does not get many visitors, so Leilani felt lucky to be there.

This week, the team was caring for a young tapir named Pepita. She had been found alone near a river. Her brown coat was covered in pale stripes and spots. Uncle Esteban gave an explanation: "Those marks help a calf hide in the shady forest."

Every morning, Leilani helped write the observation notes. She watched Pepita closely and wrote down everything she saw. Pepita munched leaves and fruit, splashed in her pool, and wiggled her short, bendy snout. When she napped, her breathing was slow and calm.

By the end of the week, Pepita was bigger and stronger. "Her growth tells us she is healthy," said Uncle Esteban. "When she is older, she can go back to the wilderness."

On her last day, Leilani made a decision. When she grew up, she would study animals just like her uncle. She hugged him goodbye and waved to Pepita, who was busy splashing in her pool.
