Career Day at Brookside School
On Career Day, three visitors came to Mr. Chen's third-grade class. Each guest told the students about a job. Zara had a notebook, and her task was to write down any new words she heard.
The first guest was Mr. Diaz, an electrician. He held up a coil of wire and a small light switch. His job is to put in the wires that carry electric power to lights and outlets in buildings. Before he starts, he turns the power off. “Safety comes first in my job,” he told the class.
Next came Dr. Okoro, a historian. She showed the class an old map of their town. “I study history,” she explained. “I read old letters, maps and newspapers to learn what life was like long ago.” Lucas asked if she ever found surprises. “All the time!” she said with a laugh.
The last guest was Ms. Lin, a musician. She opened a case and lifted out a shiny violin. “I play music with a city orchestra,” she said. Then she gave a short performance of a lively tune. The students clapped along, and when the song ended, everyone cheered.
After the guests left, Zara looked at her notebook. “Electrician, historian, musician,” she read. “Each long word has a word I already know inside it.” Mr. Chen smiled. “That is a smart clue,” he said. “A word you know can help you figure out a word you don't.”
