A Saturday at Greenway Tree Nursery
On Saturday morning, Felix Osei went to work with his aunt, Rosalind. She runs Greenway Tree Nursery. A tree nursery is a place where young trees grow until they are big enough to be planted somewhere else.
First, Aunt Rosalind showed Felix the rows of saplings. A sapling is a young tree with a thin trunk. The maple saplings grew beside the fence. The pine saplings grew between the shed and the greenhouse.
Before a customer takes a tree home, a worker digs it up with a root ball. The root ball is the clump of soil that holds the roots together. Felix helped Aunt Rosalind wrap a root ball in burlap. Burlap is a rough, strong cloth.
During lunch, they sat under a tall oak tree. "Hey, want half my sandwich?" Felix asked. "Thanks, kiddo!" Aunt Rosalind said with a grin.
After lunch, Felix spread mulch around the small trees. Mulch is a layer of wood chips that helps keep the soil damp. Meanwhile, Aunt Rosalind pruned the dead branches. To prune means to cut off parts of a plant. They worked until the sun went down behind the hills. "I can't wait to come back next Saturday," Felix said.
