While You Sleep

Our class newspaper interviewed Priya Shah. She works the night shift at Hillside Grocery. Here is what she told us.

When does your work day start? My shift starts at ten o'clock at night, one hour after the store closes. I work until six o'clock in the morning.

What do you do first? First, a big truck backs up to the loading dock behind the store. We roll the pallets inside. A pallet is a flat wooden stand that holds stacks of boxes.

Where do all the boxes go? We restock the shelves, which means we fill them up again. Each aisle, or walkway between rows of shelves, has a number. Cereal goes in aisle 5, between the oatmeal and the pancake mix. Milk and yogurt go in the dairy case along the back wall.

Do you have a favorite job? Yes! I take care of the produce. Produce means fresh fruits and vegetables. While my team fills the aisles, I stack apples, lemons and peppers near the front door. Meanwhile, the floor machine hums down every aisle.

What happens at the end of your shift? At five-thirty, we sweep the floors. By six o'clock, every shelf is full. Then I go home to sleep while you eat breakfast!
