Kebab Night

Once a year, on the first warm Saturday of spring, Grandpa Arman hosts kebab night for the whole family. Aunts, uncles and cousins squeeze into his small kitchen. This year, nine grandchildren came. Nare was the oldest, and her brother Tigran was the loudest.

Grandpa set two long tables with bowls, trays and wooden skewers. Only the grown-ups used the sharp knives. Nare's mom cut onions into thick slices. Uncle Vardan chopped red and green peppers into squares.

The children had the best job. They pushed small tomatoes, mushrooms and peppers onto the skewers. Tigran made a pattern of red, white and green. Grandma Lusine brought three fish from the market. She cut them into chunks for anyone who did not want meat. Then she warmed two loaves of flat bread.

While the kebabs cooked, Grandpa took photos of everyone. Then all four families crowded around the tables. "Thank you, my little heroes," Grandpa said. "You made dinner for the whole family!"

After dinner, the cousins patted their full bellies. The kitchen was covered in crumbs and onion skins, but nobody minded. Grandpa laughed and said, "The best chefs always make the biggest mess."
