Meet the Piano Tuner

1Every spring, a piano tuner comes to Hillside School. This year, Omar from Room 12 interviewed her for the class newspaper. Here is what she said.

2Omar: How did you learn to tune pianos?
Ms. Ito: When I was a girl, I practiced the piano every day. One winter, our old piano sounded sour, so a tuner visited our house. I watched him for two hours. After that, I wanted his job more than anything.

3Omar: What do you do when you tune a piano?
Ms. Ito: First, I lift the lid. Inside, a piano has many long strings. When you press a key, a small hammer taps the strings. I play one key at a time and listen closely. If a note sounds wrong, I turn a pin with a special tool. The pin tightens or loosens the string until the note sounds right.

4Omar: What will you do at our school?
Ms. Ito: Tomorrow, I will tune the piano in the music room. After lunch, I will check the old piano on the stage. Next month, I will visit three more schools in our town.

5Omar: Do you like your job?
Ms. Ito: Yes! I smile every time an old piano sounds sweet. Music makes people happy, and I help the music sound its best.
