Hummus Fridays

My name is Zayd. Every Friday, my grandma Hala makes a big bowl of hummus for our family. She hums while she works, and the whole kitchen smells like lemon and garlic. I am her helper.

Last Thursday, we soaked a bag of dry chickpeas in a bowl of cold water. By Friday morning, the chickpeas looked plump and round. Grandma boiled them in a pot until they were soft. Then I squeezed two lemons, and Grandma peeled the garlic.

Now I know all the steps by heart. First, Grandma pours the chickpeas into the blender. I add the lemon juice and a big spoon of sesame paste. She pushes the button, and the blender roars until she turns it off. I scrape the sides with a spatula. At the end, Grandma drizzles olive oil on top.

Next week, my class will have a family food day. I will make the hummus all by myself. Grandma will watch from her chair, but she will not help. I will carry the bowl to school, and my friends will taste it with warm bread.
