Mina's Storm

On Friday, Mr. Okafor set a jar of water and a tray of paints on every desk in the art room. "Today we will paint the sky," he said. Mina looked out the window. Dark clouds were piling up over the soccer field, so she knew exactly what kind of sky she wanted.

She soaked her brush and swept a wide stripe of gray across the top of the paper. The wet paint crept down the page in slow, wobbly lines. Mina added a drop of deep purple, and it bloomed like a flower inside the gray.

Next she dipped a thin brush in yellow. With one quick flick, a jagged streak of lightning cracked across her clouds. Her friend Teo leaned over and gasped. "Your sky looks angry!" he whispered.

When the paint dried, Mina held up her picture. Outside, the first fat raindrops were drumming on the window. Mina grinned. Her storm had arrived right on time. Mr. Okafor pinned her painting on the wall beside the window so everyone could compare the two storms.
