Up Before the Sun

Priya yawned and rubbed her eyes. The sky over the field was still dark gray, and the grass was wet and cold under her sneakers. Grandpa handed her a cup of cocoa. "Just wait," he whispered. "It will be worth it."

All around them, flat balloons lay stretched across the grass like giant sleeping blankets. Then a burner roared. A burst of flame shot into the open mouth of the nearest balloon, and the cloth began to swell. Slowly, the balloon lifted its round head and stood up tall.

One by one, more balloons woke up. There was a striped one, a polka-dot one, and one shaped like a huge orange fish. Priya bounced on her toes. "Look, Grandpa!" she squealed.

When the sun peeked over the hills, the balloons drifted up into the sky. They floated higher and higher until they looked like gumdrops scattered across a blue tablecloth. Priya tipped her head back and stared until her neck ached. The field was quiet again, but her heart was still pounding with excitement.
