Read the story
The Whirlwind
1Tavi stood at the front of the line and stared up at the Whirlwind. The red track twisted across the sky like a giant noodle. Every few minutes, a train of cars roared past, and the riders shrieked.
2"Are you ready?" asked his cousin Brigid. Tavi's knees wobbled like jelly, but he nodded and climbed into the front car.
3The car crept up the first hill. Click, click, click went the chain under the track. Tavi gripped the bar so tightly that his knuckles turned white. At the top, the whole park looked as small as a toy town.
4Then the car plunged. Wind slapped Tavi's cheeks, and his stomach flipped like a pancake. The car zoomed through a loop and rattled around a sharp curve. Tavi squeezed his eyes shut, then popped them open to see the sky spin.
5At last, the car glided back into the station. Tavi's legs felt like rubber as he climbed out. A grin stretched across his face. "Let's ride it one more time!" he shouted.
