Is It True? Ana Checks the Story

How sure is the reporter? Read and find out.

Read the story

Is It True?

1Ana Ruiz is a reporter for the Maple Falls Weekly, the town newspaper. On Monday, she ate lunch at Joy's Diner. At the next table, she heard a man say, "The town is putting a giant chess board in Pine Square!"

2Ana wondered if that was true. A good reporter does not print a story just because someone said it. She needed to check the facts.

3First, Ana walked to Pine Square. Two workers were painting big black and white squares on the ground. Ana suspected that the man was right. But squares could be used for other games, too.

4Next, she found Mr. Bose, the park gardener. "I believe the squares are for chess," he said. "But I have not seen any plans." Ana wrote his words in her notebook.

5Finally, Ana went to Town Hall. The town clerk, Ms. Tran, showed her the plans for the square. They had a drawing of a chess board and a list of tall chess pieces. Now Ana knew the story was true. The pieces would arrive on Friday.

6That night, Ana wrote her story. She was certain that every fact in it was correct.
