Thunder Over Elm Street Pool

Setting: The Elm Street city pool on a hot summer afternoon. Rosa, the lifeguard, sits in her tall chair. The twins Kofi and Ama are swimming near the steps.

KOFI: Look at those dark clouds over the hills. I wonder if it will storm.

AMA: I doubt it. The sun is shining right above us.

KOFI: I guess the clouds might float the other way.

Stage direction: A low rumble comes from the hills.

ROSA (blowing her whistle): Everyone out of the pool, please!

AMA: But it isn't even raining! Are you sure that was thunder?

ROSA: I am positive. I heard it clearly. When we hear thunder, we get out of the water. That is our pool rule.

KOFI: How long do we have to wait?

ROSA: We wait thirty minutes after the last thunder. Then I will check the sky again.

Stage direction: The swimmers wait inside the pool building. Rain begins to pour down.

AMA: I was wrong. I thought the storm would miss us. Now I realize why Rosa acted so fast.

KOFI: I'm sure we will swim again later. I just hope the sun comes back soon.
