Who Keeps Moving Mr. Pebble?

Mr. Pebble is a little clay gnome with a pointy red hat. He belongs to Mrs. Varga, who lives on the first floor of the Linden Street apartments. He always stands by her front step in the courtyard. But one week, Mr. Pebble started to travel. On Monday he was beside the bench. On Tuesday he was under the mailboxes. Hana Sato wondered who was moving him.

Hana's friend Desmond lived upstairs. "I heard that our building has a ghost," he whispered. Hana laughed. She did not think a story like that was true.

On Wednesday, Hana found muddy paw prints next to Mr. Pebble. Now she suspected that an animal was the mover. Maybe it was Biscuit, the new puppy on the second floor.

On Thursday, Hana spotted tiny tooth marks on Mr. Pebble's red hat. Biscuit loved to chew on everything, so now Hana believed he was the mover. But she had not seen him do it, so she wanted proof.

On Friday morning, Hana and Desmond watched from her window. Mr. Abara opened his door, and Biscuit trotted out. The puppy grabbed Mr. Pebble's hat in his teeth and dragged the gnome across the grass. Now Hana knew who the mover was. Mr. Abara said he was sorry and bought Biscuit a chew toy of his own.
