Stir-Fry Night

On Wednesday nights, Odessa and Tamsin cook dinner with their dad. The twins are nine years old. Their little brother, Corbin, is only five, so he sets the table.

First, Dad heats a big wok on the stove. It hisses when he adds a spoon of oil. Odessa washes the vegetables in the sink. She scrubs the carrots and shakes the water off the green beans.

Tamsin is in charge of the sauce. She mixes soy sauce, honey and a little ginger in a cup. The twins taste it with tiny spoons. "It needs more ginger," they say together.

Next, Dad drops the chicken into the wok. The pieces sizzle and turn golden. The girls add the vegetables, and Dad stirs everything with a wooden spoon. The kitchen smells sweet and salty.

Corbin carries the plates to the table. He puts a fork beside each plate. When the food is ready, the family sits down together. Everyone says that it is the best stir-fry yet.
