Domino Day in the Gym

On Friday afternoon, Ms. Haddad's class turns the gym into a domino workshop. The students have one big goal. They want to build a domino path that winds all the way around the gym floor.

Amara and Luis set up the first row. They place each domino on its end, a finger's width from the next one. Wen builds a spiral near the bleachers. She works slowly, because one bump could knock down her whole design. Theo makes a tiny bridge out of blocks for the path to cross.

Near the end of the day, Theo's sneaker catches a domino by the door. Click, click, click! A long line tips over before anyone can stop it. Theo groans. Luis hurries over and pulls two dominoes out of the line. The gap stops the fall just before Wen's spiral.

"From now on, we will leave a gap after every twenty dominoes," says Ms. Haddad. The students agree. They will fill in the gaps only at the very end, just before the big push.

At three o'clock, the whole class gathers around the start of the path. Amara gives the first domino a gentle push. The dominoes race around the gym, climb over Theo's bridge and swirl into Wen's spiral. Everyone cheers.
