Saturday at the Kart Club

Every Saturday, Odette and Bao go to the Pine Ridge Kart Club. The club has a small track with soft bumpers around every turn. The karts are tiny and slow, so even young drivers can ride. Orange cones mark the path for each race.

Before the first race, Coach Lindqvist checks every kart. He looks at the tires and tests the brakes. Then the drivers put on their helmets and gloves. Odette buckles her helmet tightly under her chin.

Today, Bao races first. His kart hums around the first bend and zips past the cones. Odette cheers from the fence. The kids in line wave their flags and shout his name.

Then it is Odette's turn. She grips the wheel and presses the pedal with her foot. Her kart curves neatly around each cone. When she crosses the line, Bao and the coach clap for her. "You drove so smoothly!" they shout. Odette grins inside her helmet. She cannot wait to race again next week.
