The Rock-Skipping Contest at Cedar Creek

Every August, the town of Pine Bend holds a rock-skipping contest at Cedar Creek. Each skipper gets a few throws. The judges count how many times a rock hops before it sinks.

Rosa searches the shore for the flattest rocks she can find. Her little brother Mateo picks up round, bumpy rocks. "Flat rocks skip better than round ones," Rosa tells him. Mateo shrugs and keeps his bumpy rocks anyway.

Mr. Lindqvist goes first. He throws with a big, strong swing, and his rock hops seven times. Next, Keiko steps up. She throws more gently than Mr. Lindqvist, but she keeps her arm low. Her rock skims the water smoothly and hops nine times!

Then it is Rosa's turn. Her first throw is a bad one, because the rock splashes and sinks right away. She takes a deep breath and throws more carefully. Her second rock hops ten times. That is the most hops of the day!

Last of all, Mateo tosses one of his bumpy rocks. It plops into the water and sinks. Everyone laughs, even Mateo. "Next year, I will choose the flattest rock on the shore," he says. Rosa wins a wooden trophy shaped like a fish, and Keiko comes in second.
