The Pepper Tasting

On Sunday, Tío Ramiro set up a pepper tasting on the long kitchen table. He cut four peppers into thin slices and put each kind on its own blue plate. "Taste them slowly," he said. "Some of them are hot!"

Marisol tried the red bell pepper first. It was sweet and crunchy, and it was not hot at all. Her little brother Tavi tasted the green bell pepper. "This one is crunchier than the red one," he said, "but it is less sweet."

Next came a jalapeño. Marisol took a tiny bite. Her mouth felt warm, so she drank her milk quickly. "The jalapeño is hotter than the bell peppers," she said.

The last plate held a small orange pepper. Tío Ramiro said it was the hottest pepper on the table. Tavi touched it with his tongue and jumped up. He ran faster than anyone to the milk jug! Marisol laughed loudly.

At the end, everyone voted. Marisol liked the red bell pepper best because it was the sweetest. Tavi said the green one was the best for dipping. Tío Ramiro just smiled. "I like the orange one," he said, "but I eat it very carefully."
