The Cardboard Boat Race

On Saturday, the Elm Street Library held a cardboard boat race at the town pool. Each team had one hour to build a boat from cardboard, tape, and paint. Then one team member would paddle the boat across the water.

Priya's team made a long, narrow boat. Sam's team made a boat that was wider than Priya's. Tomas painted his team's boat carefully, because he wanted it to look like a shark. Sam worked more quickly than Tomas, so his team finished first.

The race began, and Priya paddled hard. Her narrow boat moved faster than Sam's wide boat. Sam's boat wobbled badly and started to sink. Tomas paddled the slowest of the three racers, but his shark boat stayed dry.

Priya's team won the race, and the judges gave them a blue ribbon. Tomas's team won a prize for the best-looking boat. "This was the most fun day of the summer," said Sam, as he dried off with a towel.
