Saturday at the Laundromat

Every Saturday, Jada and her grandmother carried two big bags of clothes to the laundromat on Pine Street. The washing machines hummed, the dryers spun, and the whole place smelled like clean soap.

As soon as they walked in, Mr. Okafor waved and smiled from behind the front counter. "Good morning, Jada! I'm so glad to see you," he called. He asked about her soccer game and told her he liked her striped hat.

This week, Jada wanted to learn how to fold the towels by herself. Grandma showed her how to match the corners and smooth out the wrinkles. Jada's towels came out lumpy four times. Grandma did not rush her. "Take your time," she said. "Folding is slow work at first."

Near the dryers, a boy named Sam dug through his pockets and sighed. He needed one more quarter to dry his clothes. Ms. Reyes, who was folding sheets nearby, gave him one of her own quarters. Sam thanked her twice.

At last, the dryer buzzed. Jada pulled out the warm clothes and folded every towel neatly. Grandma gave her a high five, and Jada grinned. Next Saturday, she wanted to try folding the shirts.
