The Last Ride on Bus 14

For twenty years, Mr. Lindqvist drove Bus 14. Friday was his last day before he retired, and the riders had a plan.

Every morning, Mr. Lindqvist smiled and said good morning to each rider, even on gray, rainy days. One day, a first grader named Owen dropped his crayons all over the bus steps. Mr. Lindqvist waited calmly while Owen picked up every one.

He drove slowly near the school and checked his mirrors at every stop. Once, a fifth grader named Zainab left her lunch on the bus. Mr. Lindqvist carried it into the school office himself, so she would not go hungry.

For the big day, Zainab and her friend Rhys collected thank-you notes from all the riders. Rhys made a poster with bright, bold letters. When Mr. Lindqvist parked the bus that afternoon, everyone held up a note and shouted, "Thank you!"

Mr. Lindqvist's eyes filled with happy tears. "You are the most thoughtful riders I have ever had," he said. Then he honked the horn one last time, and the riders cheered.
