How to Check a Spelling in a Dictionary

Have you ever written a word and thought, “That doesn't look right”? A dictionary can help you check. The words in a dictionary are listed in ABC order, so you can find any word when you know how to look. Follow these steps.

Step 1: Say the word slowly. Listen to each of its sounds, and write the spelling you think is right.

Step 2: Open the dictionary to the part for the word's first letter. Then look at the guide words at the top of the pages. Your word belongs on the page where it fits between the two guide words in ABC order.

Step 3: Run your finger down the page until you find your word. Compare the entry word with your spelling, one letter at a time. Watch for letters you cannot hear, like the b in thumb, and for double letters, like the two m's in summer.

Step 4: If the word is not there, try another way to spell one of its sounds. For example, the first sound in city is spelled with a c, not an s. Then look again.

Step 5: When you find the word, fix your spelling. Copy the word carefully, and check it one more time.
