Pole-Rack Signals at the Ridge Rest Stop

Compare message devices and plan a better design.

A Message Across the Rest Stop

Listen to the story. Think about what the partners need.

The Walking-Pole Rack

A mountain trail has a shaded rest stop. Walking poles wait at a rack. Tessa stays at the rack. Omar waits at a station across a flat space. They need to send “bring a pole” or “rack empty” without walking over or speaking.

They have a flashlight, a small plastic jar with a lid, dry beans, and tape. They can use light or sound. An adult checks that the jar lid is taped shut. A white card stands beside Omar. Keep the flashlight away from eyes. Both partners learn the code before testing.

Rest-Stop Code

Three flashes or three short rattle shakes = RACK EMPTY
