Backyard Bowling Message Makers

Build and test a device that sends a message across the lawn.

A Message Across the Lawn

Listen to the plan. Think about what the device needs to do.

Backyard Bowling

At a backyard science day, Ms. Chen's class plays lawn bowling with a soft ball. A helper sets up the pins. The player waits eight big steps away. The helper needs to send READY or WAIT without calling or walking over. The ball stays still while someone is near the pins.

The class has an empty plastic tub, a wooden spoon, cardboard, tape, and a flashlight. They can build a tapping device or a light device. They will use gentle taps and keep the flashlight away from eyes. Before testing, the sender and player learn the same signal code.

Bowling Signal Code
2 taps or 2 flashes = READY
4 taps or 4 flashes = WAIT
1.
What job should the device do?
  • A. Roll the ball toward the pins.
  • B. Set the fallen pins back up.
  • C. Send READY or WAIT across the lawn.
  • D. Carry the ball back to the player.
