Two Places at the Mountain Weather Station

At Wind Gap Weather Station, Noor and Eli need to send messages across 20 steps. They test a flashlight with a cardboard flap and a clapper made from two short wooden sticks. One flash means WAIT. Two flashes with a pause mean COME. Two taps with a pause use the same message code.

First, they test at Wind Gap. The path is clear, so the receiver can see the flashlight. Eli understands 5 of 5 flashlight messages and 4 of 5 clapper messages. Then they test at Rock Shelf. A tall boulder stands between the sender and the receiver. Eli understands 1 of 5 flashlight messages and 4 of 5 clapper messages there.

The children keep the distance, message code, and receiver the same. They change the place and test each device five times. They want to choose a device that can send a message at the station.
