About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students use test results to predict how well light and sound signals will send a message.
  • Students design a simple device that sends a message across a distance using light or sound.
  • Students explain why a prediction is or is not supported by a device test.

How to use

Read the story and questions aloud. Help students read the graph, then let them draw a device. If materials are available, help students build and test their plans with gentle sounds and lights aimed below faces.

Hammock Clearing Check-In

Build a message device and predict how well it will work.

A Camping Check-In

Listen to the story. Think about how a device could send a message.

Across the Clearing

On a camping trip, Nia's group rests in a hammock clearing. An adult is at a pack table, eight big steps away. The group needs to send READY or WAIT without shouting or walking over. The adult can see and hear the group.

The group has a battery lantern, a small bell with a loop, yarn, a cardboard tube, and tape. They can build a device with these parts. The lantern flashes when switched on and off. The bell rings when shaken. Use gentle rings. Aim the light below faces. An adult stays with the group.

The Group's Signal Code
One flash or one bell ring = WAIT
Three flashes or three bell rings = READY
