Signals at Frostline Lookout

Compare two mountain places and plan a message device.

Compare the two places

Listen to the weather station team's observations. Use the graph to answer the questions.

Two Signal Tests

Rina and Theo help at Frostline Lookout, a small mountain weather station. A worker at one place needs to send READY to a partner at another place. The partners are 5 steps apart. They agree that one long flash or one long bell ring means READY.

The team tests two devices: a battery lamp that can be covered and uncovered, and a hand bell. They test each device five times at each place. The sender uses the same signal each time, and the partner says whether the message was understood.

At Clear Ledge, the path between the partners is open. At Pine Shelter, a tall group of pine trees stands between the partners. The team keeps the distance, the signal, and the number of tries the same. The results are shown in the graph.
