About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students identify a point's quadrant from the signs of its coordinates.
  • Students find reflected coordinates by changing the sign of one or both coordinates.
  • Students explain why changing one coordinate's sign reflects a point across a specific axis.

How to use

Use after introducing the four quadrants. Have students connect each sign change to an axis reflection, then explain the error in the final item.

Curriculum

Common Core standard covered

6.NS.C.6.b

Tell the quadrant of a point from the signs of its coordinates, and see that flipping a sign reflects the point across an axis.

Bakery Plans: Recipe Adjustment Maps

Use coordinate signs and reflections to compare recipe changes for a school event.

Read the Adjustment Map

The bakery is scaling recipes for a school event. Each point shows changes from a planned recipe, not total ingredient amounts. Use Roman numerals I, II, III, and IV for quadrants.

On each map, x is the change in cups of flour and y is the change in cups of sugar. Positive means add; negative means remove; zero means no change. The planned recipes contain enough ingredients for every removal shown.
