About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students explain how linking words connect an opinion to its reasons in a model piece.
  • Students sort linking words by the job they do and choose the one that fits a sentence.
  • Students use because, since and for example to connect their own opinion and reasons.

How to use

Read the opinion piece aloud and have students circle each linking word. Students answer the questions on their own, then write the last two sentences as a warm-up for a full opinion piece.

Fish on the Storm Drains: Linking an Opinion to Its Reasons

See how because, since, therefore and for example connect an opinion and its reasons.

Read the opinion piece

Thaddeus wrote this piece for his class's community board. Read it and look for linking words.

Let's Paint Our Storm Drains

1Have you ever noticed the metal grate next to the curb? That is a storm drain. When it rains, water rushes into it. In many towns, this water flows straight into a creek or river without being cleaned. I think our town should paint a bright fish next to every storm drain.

2First, the paintings would remind people to keep trash out of the drains. Since our drains empty into Marlow Creek, anything that goes into a drain can end up in the creek. For example, a juice box dropped on the sidewalk can wash all the way to the fish and turtles that live there.

3Painted drains would also make our streets more cheerful. Right now, the curbs are plain and gray. A bright orange fish or a green frog would make people smile as they walk by.

4Kids could help, too, because the pictures are simple to paint. Some towns let families sign up to paint a drain together. Therefore, painting drains could be a fun way for neighbors to work as a team.

5For all these reasons, I hope our town will paint its storm drains. Let's remind everyone that only rain belongs in a drain!

Read paragraph 2 again. Underline the sentence that begins with a linking phrase that gives an example.
