Why Room 9 Should Get Mealworms

Room 9 is choosing a class pet. Some kids want a hamster, and some want a goldfish. I think our class should get mealworms. Mealworms are the young form of an insect called the darkling beetle. I have three reasons for my opinion.

First, mealworms are easy to care for. They live in a plastic bin filled with oats. A slice of carrot gives them the water they need. They do not need walks, baths, or a big cage to clean.

Second, mealworms would help us learn about life cycles. A mealworm grows bigger and sheds its skin many times. Then it turns into a pupa that hardly moves. Later, a beetle crawls out. We could watch every stage on our science shelf.

Third, mealworms would not bother anyone. They do not squeak at night or splash water out of a tank. Their bin is small, so it would fit on a shelf without crowding our reading corner.

Mealworms are easy to care for, they can teach us about life cycles, and they would not bother anyone. Please vote for mealworms next Friday!
