The Baton Pass

The third graders at Ridgeview School practiced for the relay race every Tuesday. The big race was in two weeks. Each team had four runners. Talia ran first, and Jun ran last.

The hardest part was passing the baton. When Talia reached Rafe, she held the baton out too low. Rafe grabbed at the air. The baton bounced on the track. Everyone on the team groaned.

Coach Brandt blew her whistle. "Hold the baton out straight, and call out before you pass it," she said. Talia nodded, but her cheeks felt hot. She wanted to get it right.

The team tried again because there were ten minutes left. This time Talia called out, and Rafe reached back. The baton landed in his hand. Rafe ran fast, but Mina was even faster on the third leg.

Jun waited at the line. After Mina handed him the baton, he sprinted to the finish. The whole team cheered, and Coach Brandt gave each runner a high five.
