Ruby's First Skate
On Friday night, Ruby and her cousin Mateo went to the roller rink. It was Ruby's first time. Colored lights were spinning across the shiny wooden floor, and music was thumping from the speakers. Ruby smiled as she laced up her skates, but her knees felt like jelly.
At first, Ruby wobbled and grabbed the wall. She tried to glide, but her feet slipped. Mateo was skating in slow circles nearby. "Bend your knees and push to the side," he said kindly. Ruby took a deep breath and pushed off.
She rolled a few feet and stopped. Then she rolled a little farther. Soon she was gliding along the wall without holding on. A little girl by the snack counter clapped for her, and Ruby giggled.
When the last song began, the music slowed down. Ruby and Mateo skated side by side while the lights glowed pink and blue. Ruby's legs were tired, but her face was full of happiness. "Can we come back next week?" she asked. Mateo grinned. "I knew you would ask that!"
