Behind the Ice Cream Counter: Fixing Priya's Story

Plan, revise and edit a true story about a first day at work.

Read the first draft

Priya wrote a true story about helping at her aunt's ice cream shop. This is her first draft. Her writing partner, Jonah, is helping her make it better.

My Afternoon at the Ice Cream Shop (First Draft)

1Last summer, my aunt Rosa let me help at her ice cream shop for one afternoon. I wore a striped apron and a paper hat. I was nervous because I had never worked in a real shop before.

2A long line of customers came in after the town baseball game. I was so busy that my arm got tired from scooping. A little boy ordered two scoops of mint. The scoops fell off his cone and landed on the floor. He started to cry.

3Before the doors opened, Aunt Rosa showed me how to hold the scoop and roll it across the ice cream. I practiced on a cup of vanilla for her.

4I gave the boy a new cone with two fresh scoops, and he smiled. aunt Rosa said, you handled that well.

5At closing time, I wiped the counter and counted the spoons. My feet were tired. It was a good day.
