Fixing Up the Fort Story: Revise and Edit

Help a writer make his first draft stronger.

Read Omar's first draft

Omar wrote a first draft of a true story. His writing partner, Grace, and his teacher, Mr. Reyes, helped him make it better. The draft still has some mistakes.

The Best Fort Ever

1Last Saturday was too cold to play outside. My sister Rosa and I were bored. Then Rosa had a great idea. "Let's build a fort in the living room!" she said. Mom said we could use anything as long as we cleaned up afterward.

2First, we set up two kitchen chairs a few feet apart. We hung a big green blanket across them to make a low roof. My soccer cleats are too small for me now. Rosa spread pillows on the floor so it would be soft.

3Next, we went inside. The fort was nice. We brought in a flashlight becuase it was dark under the blanket. Rosa made a shadow bunny on the blanket with her hands. We read comic books until our eyes got sleepy.

4Then our dog, pepper, ran in and bumped a chair. The whole blanket fell on our heads! Rosa and I laughed so hard. We fixed the fort, and this time we gave him his own pillow.

5That was the day
