A Visit to the Harbor Station

1On Saturday, the coast guard station by the harbor held an open house. Wendell and his little sister Pia went with their grandfather. Since Grandpa had worked on a fishing boat for many years, he wanted to thank the crew.

2Officer Ruth Lindgren met them at the gate. She led them to a dock where two rescue boats with bright orange sides were tied up. "We take a boat out whenever someone on the water needs help," she said. Pia wanted to climb aboard, but the boats had to stay ready for a real call.

3Next, Officer Lindgren showed them a wall of life jackets. The crew members wear them on the boats even though they are strong swimmers. Wendell tried on a jacket, and it hung down almost to his knees. Pia giggled, so Wendell made a silly face.

4In the radio room, a crew member listened to calls from boats. She writes down every message so that nobody forgets an important detail. As soon as a new weather report came in, she shared it with the boat crew.

5Before they left, Grandpa shook Officer Lindgren's hand. "You can visit again, or you can watch our practice drills from the pier," she said. Wendell was tired, yet he talked about the rescue boats all the way home.

Two kinds of conjunctions: A coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, so, yet) joins two ideas that are equally important. A subordinating conjunction (such as since, whenever, even though, so that or as soon as) begins a part of a sentence that cannot stand alone.
