Imani's Night Backstage

On the night of the third-grade play, Imani worked backstage. Her job was to keep track of every prop. Mr. Delgado, the director, handed her a long list. "The actors' props must be on this table before the curtain opens," he said.

First, Imani found the king's crown in a box of hats. Next, she set the queen's tall staff beside it. The two mice in the play needed tails, so she hung the mice's tails on a hook. Then she checked the children's song folders. Every folder had a song sheet inside.

Just before the show, Imani noticed a problem. One of the dragon's wings was bent. She fixed the wing with tape and a piece of wire. Her friend Tobiah ran the lights, and he gave her a thumbs-up from the booth.

When the curtain closed, the families' cheers filled the gym. Mr. Delgado smiled at the crew. "Some of the play's best helpers never stood on the stage," he said. Imani grinned. She was already excited about next year's show.
