The Zigzag Bridge

Kofi and Inés had one hour to build a bridge for Bridge Day at school. Their bridge had to hold a small toy truck. Kofi cut cardboard into long strips. Inés glued the strips together in one flat line.

Kofi lifted the bridge and grinned. "It looks great!" he said. Then he put the toy truck in the middle. The bridge sagged, bent, and flopped onto the table. Kofi's smile disappeared. He crossed his arms and frowned. "I quit," he said.

Inés did not quit. She picked up a strip of cardboard and folded it into a zigzag. "Folds make paper stronger," she said softly. "Let's try it together." Kofi sighed, but he took a strip and started folding too.

Soon the bridge had a zigzag of folds underneath. This time, the truck rolled all the way across, and the bridge held. Kofi jumped up and cheered. "We did it!" he said. "Thanks for helping me try again." Inés smiled and gave him a high five.
