Version A, written by Ruth Calloway

Mina's Small Hands

1Mina's family was getting ready for Grandpa's birthday dinner. Mom stirred a big pot of soup. Uncle Ray rolled out bread dough. Mina's big brother, Sami, set out the plates. "Can I help?" asked Mina. "You are too little," said Sami. "Go and play." Mina sat under the table and frowned.

2Then Grandma cried, "Oh no! My silver soup spoon!" The spoon had slipped into the thin gap behind the heavy cupboard. Mom reached for it. Sami tried too. But their hands were too big to fit.

3Mina slid her small hand into the gap and pulled out the spoon. Everyone cheered. That night, Mina got a very special job. She carried the birthday cake to Grandpa. "Small hands can do big things," Grandpa said with a smile.
