Asha's Heart-Shaped Roti
Use the pictures, words and tap features of a digital story.

Read the digital story
This is a digital story with five screens. Each screen has a picture, described in words, and the story words. Some screens also have a part you can tap. Read every part.
Screen 1
Picture: A warm kitchen. Outside the window, the sun is setting. Nani, in a green apron, stands at the counter by a big bowl of dough. Asha, a girl with two long braids, stands on a step stool and smiles up at Nani.
Tap: Tap the bowl to hear Nani hum a happy tune.
Words: "Tonight you can help me make roti," said Nani. Asha clapped her hands. She had watched Nani make roti many times, but she had never made one herself.
Screen 2
Picture: Asha rolls a ball of dough with a rolling pin. Her flat dough is long and bumpy, not round. Flour covers her nose. Her little brother, Dev, peeks over the counter and giggles behind his hand.
Tap: Tap the dough to make it wiggle.
Words: Nani showed Asha how to roll the dough flat. Asha pushed the rolling pin back and forth. "Mine looks funny," she said quietly.
Screen 3
Picture: Nani holds up Asha's flat dough. It is shaped like a lopsided heart. Asha's cheeks are pink, and she looks down at her feet.
Words: "Look," said Nani. "Your roti is shaped like a heart. Every cook makes funny shapes at first."
