The Lemurs and the Lost Sunny Spot

Describe how each character responds to a big storm.

Read the story

The Sunny Spot

1Zara and her little brother, Bodo, were ring-tailed lemurs. They lived high in a big fruit tree with Grandma Kiki. Every morning, the three lemurs sat on the top branch and warmed their bellies in the sun.

2One night, a storm roared over the forest. Wind shook the tree, and rain poured down. Bodo hid his face in Grandma's fur and shivered. Zara wrapped her long striped tail around him. Then she hummed a soft song until the storm ended.

3In the morning, the top branch lay broken on the ground. Bodo's ears drooped, and tears filled his eyes. "Our sunny spot is gone!" he cried. Zara stomped her feet. "That storm ruined everything!" she shouted.

4Grandma Kiki did not cry or stomp. She looked around slowly. Then she pointed to a flat rock beside the river. The sun was shining right on it. "Look," she said with a smile. "A new sunny spot."

5Bodo wiped his eyes and raced to the rock. Zara followed, grumbling the whole way. But soon the warm rock felt so good that she laughed. "This spot is even better!" she said. The three lemurs sat together, bellies to the sun.
