Kofi's Tee-Ball How-To: Revise and Edit

Put the steps in order, keep to the topic, and fix the mistakes.

Read Kofi's how-to

Kofi wrote a first draft of a how-to about tee-ball. His partner, Lucia, read it and put sticky notes on it. His teacher, Ms. Brandt, helped too.

Kofi's How-To (first draft)

1My coach and i practice tee-ball every Saturday at Elm Park. Hitting is my favorite part. Tee-ball is like baseball, but the ball sits on a tall stand called a tee. The ball does not move, so it is easier to hit. Here is how to hit the ball off the tee.

2First, put the ball on the tea. Next, swing the bat and hit the ball. Then stand next to home plate with your feet apart. Hold the bat with to hands. My brother has a red bike. After that, lift the bat up over your shoulder. Last, drop the bat and run to first base.

3Tee-ball is fun.

Revise the how-to

Use Lucia's notes and Ms. Brandt's tips to make the steps clear and keep them on the topic.

1.
Kofi needs a title that tells his topic. Which title fits his how-to best?
  • A. A Fun Day at Elm Park
  • B. My Brother's Red Bike
  • C. All About Baseball Gloves
  • D. Hitting a Ball Off a Tee
2.
Lucia put sticky notes next to three sentences in paragraph 2. Match each note to the sentence it is about.
  1. This sentence is not about tee-ball.
  2. This step is in the wrong place. It should come later.
  3. This step needs an order word at the start.
  1. A. Hold the bat with to hands.
  2. B. Then stand next to home plate with your feet apart.
  3. C. My brother has a red bike.
  4. D. Next, swing the bat and hit the ball.
3.
Ms. Brandt says a how-to should help new players stay safe. Which sentence should Kofi add after the last step in paragraph 2?
  • A. Swing the bat before you put the ball on the tee.
  • B. Do not throw the bat, because it could hit someone.
  • C. Tee-ball is fun, and it is a fun game to play too.
  • D. My brother rides his red bike to the park on Sundays.
4.
Kofi's ending in paragraph 3 is very short. Which sentence would make the best ending for his how-to?
  • A. Now you know how to hit off a tee, so go try it!
  • B. First, put the ball on the tee and pick up the bat.
  • C. Tee-ball is a game, and a game is a thing you play.
  • D. My brother and I rode our bikes to the park today.
5.
Add a detail: Lucia asked, "Where should I look when I swing?" Write a sentence Kofi could add to his steps to answer her.

Edit the how-to

Check the words and the capital letters, then write the fixed steps.

6.
In paragraph 2, Kofi wrote tea and to, but he meant different words that sound the same. Write the word he meant in each sentence. Use the word bank.
Word bank: two · tea · too · tee · to

First, put the ball on the  .
Hold the bat with   hands.

7.
Which shows the first sentence of paragraph 1 written correctly?
