Read Mateo's letter
Mateo's class visited a glass studio. He wrote a first draft of a thank-you letter to Ms. Novak, the glassblower. Then his partner, June, and his teacher, Mr. Abebe, helped him make it better.
Mateo's Letter (first draft)
1Dear Ms. Novak,
Thank you for letting our class visit your glass studio on friday. It was the best field trip of the year.
2First, you showed us the furnace. It was big. You said it is much hotter than a kitchen oven. Next, you put a blob of hot glass on the end of a long pipe. My sister likes to play the drums. You blew into the pipe, and the glass grew into a bubble. Then you turned the pipe again and again so the glass would not droop.
3My favrite part was the vase you made at the end. It was nice. I lerned that glass gets soft when it is very hot. Now I want to work with glass when I grow up.
4Thank you again for sharing your art with us.

Mateo
Talking With June
June: "I like your letter! One sentence in paragraph 2 is not about the visit. Also, I can't picture the furnace. What did it look like?"
Mateo: "It was as tall as Ms. Novak, and the inside glowed orange."
June: "What did the vase look like?"
Mateo: "It was tall and blue, with green swirls."
Mr. Abebe: "Check your spelling, capital letters, and commas before you send the letter."
