The Turkey on Our Fence

Last Saturday morning, I was eating oatmeal by the kitchen window. Suddenly, something big and brown landed on our back fence. I almost dropped my spoon. It was a wild turkey!

I wanted a closer look, so I tiptoed to the back door. My heart was beating fast. "What if it runs away?" I wondered. Abuela put her hand on my shoulder. "Stay inside, Mateo," she whispered. "Wild animals need their space."

Next, the turkey puffed up its feathers and spread its tail like a giant fan. Then it gobbled so loudly that I giggled. I pressed my nose against the cold glass and watched every move it made.

After a few minutes, the turkey flapped its big wings. It flew off the fence and into the woods! My mouth dropped open. I did not know that turkeys could fly.

That night, I drew the turkey in my nature notebook. Under my picture, I wrote, "Best breakfast visitor ever!" Now I look out the window every morning, hoping it will come back.
