The Pit That Took Its Time

Study a story about waiting, then plan your own.

Read the story

Read the story. Look for time words and for what Malia says, does and feels.

The Pit That Took Its Time

1One Sunday, Malia and her grandpa made avocado toast for lunch. Malia held up the big brown pit. "Can we grow a tree from this?" she asked. Grandpa smiled. "Let's find out," he said.

2First, Grandpa pushed three toothpicks into the sides of the pit. Next, Malia rested the toothpicks on the rim of a glass of water so the bottom of the pit sat in the water. Then she set the glass on a sunny windowsill.

3Every morning, Malia checked the pit. One week later, nothing had changed. Two weeks later, it looked exactly the same. Malia sighed and crossed her arms. "This pit is never going to grow," she grumbled. "Plants take their time," Grandpa said.

4Then, one morning, Malia saw a crack down the middle of the pit. A few days later, a thin white root poked out of the bottom and reached into the water. Malia jumped up and down. "Grandpa, come look!" she shouted.

5At last, a tiny green stem peeked out of the top. Grandpa helped Malia plant it in a pot of soil. Malia smiled at her little plant. Waiting had been hard, but it was worth it.
