Breakfast at the Sunrise Diner
Every weekend, Mai and her dad eat breakfast at the Sunrise Diner. The diner sits beside the highway. Its round sign glows in the early daylight.
Mai slides into a booth by the window. Ms. Ramos, the cook, waves hello from the grill. Dad orders a bowl of oatmeal with maple syrup. Mai asks for a bagel with peanut butter.
Soon a toaster pops in the kitchen. Ms. Ramos brings the food on a tray. She sets down a little teapot for Dad, too. Warm steam floats out of its spout.
A baby in the next booth giggles and waves. Mai waves back and takes a big bite of her bagel. "This is the best bagel in town!" she says. Dad smiles and lifts his spoon. "Same time next weekend?" he asks. Mai nods and grins.
