About this worksheet

What students practice

  • Students decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowel sounds.
  • Students split two-syllable words so an open syllable keeps its long vowel sound.
  • Students sort two-syllable words by how the long vowel is spelled.

How to use

Read the journal aloud once, then have students reread it on their own. Have them clap and say each syllable before they sort or split a word.

Zuri's Baton Journal

Read two-syllable words that have long vowel sounds.

Read the journal

Read Zuri's journal. Look for words with two syllables and a long vowel sound. A long vowel says its own name, like the o in zero.

Zuri's Baton Journal

1Monday: Today I went to my first baton class. My baton is a silver stick with a rubber tip on each end. Ms. Kowal showed us how to spin it. My baton slipped and rolled below a bench! Ms. Kowal smiled. "Even the best twirlers drop it at first," she said.

2Wednesday: I practiced on our driveway after school. I started with a tiny spin by the window. Then I tried a bigger one. My little brother cheered from the porch. I did not drop my baton once!

3Saturday: Today was our show at the school gym. The music played, and I tossed my baton up high. I caught it with one hand! Everyone clapped. Next season, I want to learn a rainbow toss.
