  • Students read words ending in old, ind and ild with a long vowel sound.

How to use

Read the story aloud together, then have students say each word softly before they sort or circle it. Review the two vowel rules in Part 3 before students start that part.

Cocoa on a Cold Night

1It was a cold night in the middle of winter. Ines and Grandpa Rudy got home from a long walk. Ines rubbed her red hands. "Can we make cocoa?" she asked.

2Grandpa held up an old pot with a black handle. "I got this pot when I was a child," he told her. "It is the best kind of pot for cocoa." He set it on the stove, and Ines poured in the milk.

3Ines added the cocoa and a pinch of sugar. Then she had to mix and mix. "Go slow," said Grandpa. "Hot milk can spill." Ines did not stop until the cocoa was smooth and thick.

4At last, Grandpa filled two mugs. Ines could not find the marshmallows, so she dropped in a cinnamon stick. Grandpa took a sip. "Mild and sweet," he said. Ines held her mug, and her hands did not feel cold. "Thank you for being so kind, Grandpa," she said.
