The Mud Kitchen

Nia and her little brother Gus had a mud kitchen in the backyard. A wide crate was the stove. A flat stone was the table. A tin can held spoons and sticks.

"Let's bake a cake," said Nia. She dug up wet mud with a cup and dumped it in a pan. Gus mixed in some sand. Then he pressed the mud flat with his hand.

Next, Nia made the top of the cake. She set five pine cones in a line. Gus added a red leaf and a white pebble. "It needs a candle," he said. He ran to get a thin twig.

At last the cake was done. Nia held it up with a big smile. Gus clapped his muddy hands. Then a bee buzzed by and landed on a pine cone. "Look!" Gus said. "Our cake has a guest!"
