Jam Day

On Saturday, Mateo went to Auntie Rae's small yellow house to make strawberry jam. A big bowl of red berries sat on the table. "These berries are plump," said Auntie Rae. "That means they are round and full of juice."

Mateo washed the berries carefully. Then he mashed them with a heavy fork. The berries turned soft and mushy. Juice dripped slowly down his fingers. "Sticky!" he laughed.

Auntie Rae poured the berries into a tall pot and added sugar. She stirred the pot gently with a long wooden spoon. Soon the jam began to bubble. "Stand back," she said. "Hot jam can splatter. That means it jumps out in little drops."

When the jam was thick and shiny, Auntie Rae spooned it into clean glass jars. The kitchen smelled sweet. The next morning, Mateo spread the jam on warm toast. He took a bite and smiled happily. "This is the best jam in the whole world," he said.
